Ancient City of Myra

Discover rock-cut tombs and Roman theatre steeped in myth.

About This Experience

The ancient city of Myra, located near modern Demre, was one of the most important cities of ancient Lycia. Its most striking features are the elaborate rock-cut tombs carved into the cliff face, resembling ornate building facades complete with columns and pediments.

The Roman theatre, one of the largest in Lycia, could seat over 10,000 spectators and is remarkably well-preserved with detailed stone reliefs depicting theatrical masks. The acoustics remain impressive even today.

Myra is also associated with St. Nicholas (Santa Claus), who served as bishop here in the 4th century. The nearby Church of St. Nicholas attracts pilgrims from around the world and houses his original sarcophagus.
